My Experience with Reading

Rashmi Agrawal

Hey there! If you don't know me, Myself Rashmi Agrawal; Yoga, Health, and Productivity expert from India. In case you feel more curious about me after reading this article ( maybe!), you can find a bit more of  me at these two places- ABOUT ME and AMAZON AUTHOR CENTRAL

When I publicly started writing two years back, had an urge to write some detailed and well-researched articles on Yoga and Meditation. Before Google or any search robots could find me, I wanted my friends and relatives to read first and give me some feedback or praise for my excellent work!  So I started sharing my posts on various social media platforms.  Waiting patiently, I was hitting publish button one after another. This writing schedule was giving me so much of the back pain, eyes burns, occasional headaches, and never-ending anxiety. But what about the feedback!  My friends and relatives, who used to promptly send and receive messages and videos ( mostly of social issues and jokes), got disappeared...

Something is wrong. I decided to contact each of them one by one to inquire about my articles. I was totally astounded by their "FEEDBACKS"! They could not yet read my article because of the lack of time. Some of them, kind enough to read, commented - "Exhausting"!

"But you can read and reply messages round the clock", I complained. Your articles are too lengthy and time-consuming, they disdained. So this is it. Now read this:

Is reading and attention span connected?

  • According to research, our attention span has markedly decreased in just 15 years. In 2000, it was 12 seconds. Now, 15 years later, it’s shrunk significantly to 8.25 seconds.
  • In fact, scientists reckon we now have shorter attention spans than goldfish, who are able to focus on a task or object for 9 seconds.
  • That means – as a writer – I was sharing my posts with goldfish. No wonder it sometimes feels difficult!
  • Human beings are very, very forgetful…25% of teens forget major details of close friends and relatives. 7% of people forget their own birthday from time to time, and studies suggest that each week, 39% of Americans will forget one basic piece of information or lose one everyday item.
  • Oh, and by the way, we’re also easily distracted! An average office worker will check their email inbox 30 times every hour (yup…every two minutes…wow) and will pick up their phones more than 1,500 times per week amounting to 3 hours and 16 minutes a day.
  • What about when we’re browsing online? Similar story, I’m afraid. On the average web page, users will read at most 28% of the words during a visit, with 20% a more likely expectation. The average page visit lasts less than a minute and users often leave web pages in just 10-20 seconds. SOURCE

Uhh, but why I'm telling you all this instead of Benefits of Book Reading!! Well, friends reading a book is a mindfulness activity, greatly related to your attention span. You can put your hands in reading a book only if you have some gravity, stability along with mindfulness.

And like many other equations- vice-versa is also true. Need not to mention again that reading can increase your attention span, gravitate your thoughts and make you more mindful. So many benefits out of just one activity? Let's do some deep diving, burying head and nose and coming out in detail about all the benefits book reading can give us.

Why book reading should be included in our daily activity

I quote “Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.” Warren Buffett

As of now picking up and reading a book may seem simple fun or another time pass gig. You would have seldom realized those stimulations the book reading offers to your brain and body. No doubt, why an adept reader is blessed with a sharp mind, good writing, and excellent communication skills!

Here you may not come to an agreement that something as ordinary as reading may increase your imagination. But this is the fact guys. Naturally, this extension in your fantasy will be in the area, what you read and love most.

After knowing all the benefits of reading a book, you will surely bow to read something of your choice every day. Here you will find a reason, why should you handpick a book now, and dive into those black lines, without any delay!

1. reading adds to your vocabulary

How many times you came across to an unknown word while reading. Not while reading something like this article ( I don't want to make you run for a dictionary, ha.ha), hence never use fancy words. Often, in my morning newspaper, I come across many such words. I go back to the topic I was reading and try to find the context. And know what, most of the times come up with the exact meaning for those unknown words. Or go to Dictionary for some in-depth knowledge. And the simplest one is goto voice search and speak it out and lo - you have everything about it.  More you read, more you add-on to your vocabulary each day - word by word and phrases by phrases. Know more about increasing your vocabulary through reading.

2. Reading makes you a BETTER WRITER

Reading improves your vocabulary. Now you find your interest, tone, an interesting topic and start writing by knitting your impressively rich words. Although easier said than done, not all the readers are writers. But, all the writers are essentially bulk readers. Check a writer about his favorite time pass… binge reading is what has established him as a writer!

Each best - selling author somewhere imitates his favorite author’s style of writing before finding his own tone and recognition!

3. Reading Broadens Your Imagination

Reading stimulates the right side of your brain. Immersing yourself in a good book boosts the brain connectivity and improves the overall functioning. No doubt why reading is considered to improve your imagination analogous to the muscle memory in sports.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.
- Albert Einstein

Who else may know this fact better than the Einstein himself, who used his sheer power of imagination and creativity to make our world a better place to live and understand!

Hence more we read, more progressive we turn. By feeding our brain with good reads, we widen its thinking abilities. And with these added power our brain opens up for new possibilities and gives birth to an OUT OF BOX THINKING.

Lead Emory researcher Gregory Berns concluded, "At a minimum, we can say that reading stories—especially those with strong narrative arcs—reconfigures brain networks for at least a few days. It shows how stories can stay with us. This may have profound implications for children and the role of reading in shaping their brains."

It is discovered further, that reading an interesting book can impact your level of imagination and lower down the stress level by shifting your focus point from trouble to the new world of imaginary characters! Hence don’t get surprised when reading brings so many changes in your life.

4. Improves your level of concentration and memory

Find amazing benefits of reading book. Why reading a book can make your concentration better. Why you should read everyday! #list of best self-help books # healthy cook books #yoga books

Yes, reading is a MENTAL GYM and the biggest mindfulness activity. And if you’re into a book reading, you are exercising even better! Let me explain you.

Suppose you’re reading a self-help book, bit by bit each day. Depending upon the time in hand, you read certain pages/chapters each day,  then bookmark where you left, for the next day. Next time, reading from where you left, requires you to recall what you have read earlier. Without which it would be hard to continue further. Here you are linking with that part of the brain which was used to store your earlier day read. This is the best method to enhance your memory and level of concentration. This method is called spaced repetition and to understand it better check- LEARNING HOW TO LEARN by Dr. Barbara Oakley.

5. Reading to Mindfulness

Once you are focused, mindfulness is what you achieve next. Read mindfully please: First reading requires to settle you at one place for longer which is your first requirement or symptom of being in the state of mindfulness! Remember those MEDITATION sessions. You find it hard to sit and be present. On the other hand, reading makes it too easier to remain in one place and focus on just one thing. This is how reading keeps you at the present state of mind.

Your brain retains chunks of book you read and in the process, the part of the brain that controls memory is stimulated resulting in a brain work out!

6. A book is your perfect sleep partner

Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading. Once you bow to reading while on the bed, you are physically relaxed and mentally de-stresses. This is how you can craft and boost a sleep environment!

This trick may prove to be a miracle when you’re extremely tired during daytime and seeking a POWER NAP! Find some cozy place to settle down with a book of your choice. Now get ready to experience a Quick Snooze.

7. Reading Books May Send You to Peaceful Heaven

This one may be a bit exaggerating but a fact in my case. I love reading forever. Other activities such as listening to music, watching a movie or an outing with friends and family also contribute to some peacefulness from a hectic day. But there is no match for reading a book. Reading in a secluded area can be the highest level of peacefulness activity!

Many great readers and writers have mentioned the importance of reading just for the sake of peace of mind!

8. Books Have the Power to Sharpen your brain

Find amazing benefits of reading book. Why reading a book can make your concentration better. Why you should read everyday! #list of best self-help books # healthy cook books #yoga books

As I reiterated earlier too about how reading stimulates your brain. This stimulation plays an important role in the sharpening of your brain.

When you sharply focus on the subject and related words, you focus intensively to send your brain enough information to evoke its critical thinking abilities.

Technology has taken a front seat when it comes to learning and gaining knowledge. Once that was a vital component of reading, has been pushed back in our life. We are into a frenzy of neglecting our year’s old tradition of book reading, neglecting the fact that books are steps ahead of all the technologies put together!

Reading books alone has the potential to broaden our thinking and sharpening our brain.

I apologize for not knowing the name of the writer of these golden words:

"TODAY A READER, TOMORROW A LEADER"

8 Benefits of Reading Books. We must know the benefits of reading. #Mindfulness #Writer

Reading books can be the best form of spreading awareness about a subject. Regular reading improves our cognitive skill.

Hence, if you find yourself losing interest in reading because of your hectic schedule (with Electronics, ha…ha), don’t crush your imagination and thinking. Take an oath to be a part of this mental exercise and let your brain expand beyond the limit. Start reading today and set free your brain from the tech-grips and let it romance with the magical world of words which is full of imagination and creativity!

Anyway, do you feel motivated after knowing all the benefits of book reading? Want to start from today...now? Well, I have a list of some all-time Best Seller Books which are my personal favorite too.

Coincidentally, many of them are the self-help kind of reads.

What are self-help books- why should you read them

Benefits of reading a Book. Find here a list of the best ever #self help books. The successful people read them to skyrocket their # productivity!

Self-help or self-improvement books are books first of all! Secondly, all the self-help books are written with a clear intention of helping its readers to improve some aspect of their personal or professional life.

Self-improvement books now account for at least a $2.5 billion a year industry in the U.S. alone, increasing since 1972 to at least 2.5% of the total number of books in print. Approximately one-third to one-half of adults in the U.S. have purchased a self-improvement book at least once in their lifetime. These books are certainly must read for all. After all, who doesn't want some improvement in his/her life? Books can offer some quick solution for a most sought after problem and work as a good psychotherapist.

But, a word of caution here. Don't be addictive and keep buying one after another. One such book, written by an author of Good Credibility, when followed as per the instructions, thereby can bring significant changes in your life. Read one book and bring things recommended there into action. Only this is the best way to help thyself! Reading without action won't bring all those sought-after changes.

Here I want to make this DISCLOSURE about your purchase of these books. If you click and buy a book from this page, I may earn a small commission without costing you an extra cent. I have read most of these but not all. Therefore for book description, I had to rely on Amazon up to a certain extent! Now you can go ahead happily!

 1.  You Are a Badaas

You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero:

Jen Sincero wants to help you live your best life. Hilarious and inspiring, You Are a Badass is a book for those ready to make big changes in their lives. From confronting your fears about taking risks to make money, to finding love, Sincero teaches how to become your own personal cheerleader—and kick butt doing it.

2. The subtle art of not giving a f*ck

By Mark Manson -The book presents an interesting viewpoint on the meaning of life, questioning traditional self-help gurus, consumerism, and over-obsession with positive thinking.

Most of us give up some of our ideas as we grow up, try to have a career and make money. While that’s just part of real life, it’s important you don’t hand off the steering wheel altogether. Values you don’t control are bad because they’ll be a constant source of unnecessary suffering in your life.

 3. Think and grow rich

(I personally believe this one to be the mother of all self-improvement books.)

By Napoleon Hill- Success comes to those who become success conscious. Failure comes to those who indifferently allow themselves to become failure conscious. The object of this book is to help all who seek it to learn the art of changing their minds from failure consciousness to success consciousness.

"When you begin to think and grow rich, you will observe that riches begin with a state of mind, with definiteness of purpose, with little or no hard work. You and every other person ought to be interested in knowing how to acquire that state of mind which will attract riches… Observe very closely, as soon as you master the principles of this philosophy, and begin to follow the instructions for applying those principles, your financial status will begin to improve, and everything you touch will begin to transmute itself into an asset for your benefit. Impossible? Not at all!”

This is one of my personal favorites among all the books in the self-help category. With simple writing and clear instructions to follow, this book fulfills most of the promises made by the veteran author Napolean Hill.

One big difference noticed by students of Yin Yoga is the long-held, passive nature of the posture, which gives time for a deeper journey to unfold, a journey into the meditative aspects of yoga, a bridge to living life mindfully.

Clark presents comprehensive information on how to do the practice, including a deep look inside over two dozen Yin Yoga postures showing the benefit of the pose, how to get into and out of the pose, contraindications, and warnings for those who may have trouble with particular aspects of the posture, and other important information. The benefits are explored in three main sections: the physiological benefits, the energetic benefits, and the mental/emotional benefits.

I am a bit hesitant about this because these aren't among the best sellers currently, but some evergreen, timeless classics. Please consider them with love and honor. Wuthering Heights

One of English literature's classic masterpieces—a gripping novel of love, propriety, and tragedy. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

Emily Brontë's only novel endures as a work of tremendous and far-reaching influence. The Penguin Classics edition is the definitive version of the text, edited with an introduction by Pauline Nestor.

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, situated on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before. What unfolds is the tale of the intense love between the gypsy foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. Catherine, forced to choose between passionate, tortured Heathcliff and gentle, well-bred Edgar Linton, surrendered to the expectations of her class. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance at his betrayal are visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

In this edition, a new preface by Lucasta Miller, author of The Brontë Myth, looks at the ways in which the novel has been interpreted, from Charlotte Brontë onwards. This complements Pauline Nestor's introduction, which discusses changing critical receptions of the novel, as well as Emily Brontë's influences and background.

A Farewell To Arms

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Hemingway’s frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto—of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized—is one of the greatest moments in literary history. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was thirty years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Resurrection

Tolstoy's last major novel (1899) is his twilight indictment of the criminal justice and penal systems. The novel opens with the Russian prince Dmitri N. serving on a jury in a criminal trial of 3 peasants, a man, and 2 women, accused of poisoning and robbing the deceased. Prince recognizes one of the accused women, named Ms. Maslova, as a young maid he deflowered when both were teens a decade earlier during his visit to his aunts' home. The head maid had fired Maslova, an educated peasant, after finding out she slept with the Prince. With nowhere else to turn, Maslova became a prostitute.

Although the jury finds Maslova not guilty, an error in the jury's verdict form leaves her technically guilty of an act contributing to the death, and thus subject to mandatory imprisonment. Believing his actions directly caused Maslova's wayward path ultimately leading to the imprisonment, Prince N sets out on a course to overturn her conviction and have her freed. In the process, he talks with numerous other prisoners and learns of much unfairness, perceived and real, both specific to cases and generally resulting from being raised in a bad environment.

Regrettably, this novel wanes about halfway through when Tolstoy "tells" much more than he "shows," the novel becomes more of a scathing sermon, full of homilies and exhortations seeming to champion a sort of anarchist view of Christianity whereby no person can sit in judgment of any other (all of us being sinners).

Ten years after the success of Linda Goodman's Sun Signs, Goodman published Linda Goodman's Love Signs, which answered the question posed by almost every reader of astrology--how does my sign relate and interface with the twelve other signs of the zodiac? • I love that you pointed out that our vocabulary would be wider and better because I’m breathing which can also help us write better regarding certain topics. Because of that, it would be great to invest in an early reader chapter book series for boys so that my son has a wide vocabulary. And he can use that scale and knowledge as he gets older and then school, especially when there are essay tests and other exams he has to take or even joining competitions during the English month.
