If you consider henna as a beautifying and coloring agent, think again. Henna leave and powder is considered auspicious and is used during the occasions of marriage and other ceremonies in many parts of the world.

Henna helps to improve hair health. It helps seal the hair cuticle, prevents breaking, and increases the shine and appearance of the hair. It is also a natural treatment for dandruff.

PS- Before using a readymade henna powder, be sure it's natural green color. Read the package carefully for any chemical or unnatural supplement.

Henna that is black in color can be dangerous and should not be used. The dark color implies that the henna plant was mixed with chemical compounds to give it that color. Also, hair dyes that claim to be henna-based occasionally contain other chemicals that can be harmful or cause allergic reactions for those who have sensitive skin, so read your labels carefully!

According to Femina Curd contains fats that can help moisturize your hair. In other words, the curd is a highly recommended natural conditioner for your hair. The lactic acid in curd or yogurt can really help in softening your tresses. The following hair masks with curd can be further helpful in conditioning your hair.

Eggs are a nutrient-rich hair superfood. Vitamins A and E, biotin, and folate are just some of the nutrients found in eggs that are said to help keep hair thick and healthy. Many people recommend the use of egg white only but the yolk is loaded with healthy fats, which help replenish moisture and make strands look sleek and shiny. So make use of the complete egg.

My mom's concoction which she used to wash my hair as a 'substitute for a shampoo' for years until I insisted to opt for bottled version. Let me first briefly tell you about its pro points.

  • Pure and chemical-free
  • Free of artificial scents
  • Mild on hair tough on dirt

Ingredients

Gooseberry (Amla) + Soap nuts (Ritha) + Shikakai (acacia concinna)

Amla or gooseberry contains a high amount of antioxidants, which helps repair damaged hair and cells. Regular use of amla helps to protect hair from further damages. It is important to take care of your hair cells because growth and greying of hair depend on the function of the these cells. Amla also helps in preventing hair loss and baldness.

Reetha, or soapnut, is filled with iron, which is beneficial for your hair. Reetha is packed with antioxidants, which play an important role in hair health. Reetha is also a very effective hair cleansing agent that keeps your scalp healthy by removing infection-causing buildup and microorganisms.

Shikakai, or acacia concinna, has a rich amount of vitamin C, which is beneficial for your hair. Shikakai naturally balances the pH value and retains the natural oils of the hair and keeps them lustrous and healthy. It is also helpful in strengthening and conditioning your hair.

Amla, reetha, and shikakai are years old Concoction people in India and other Asian use for washing hair. And the soap nut alone is used to wash sophisticated woolen products. After all, hair and wools both are body furs.

Anyway, the combo amla, reetha, and shikakai are a well balanced filled with many useful nutrients. These three also compliments each other, therefore, they are mixed together to have healthy and lustrous hair. All of these ingredients come in two forms, one as dried fruit and other in powdered form. I recommend the ungrounded fruits and pods because they retain more nutrients and are in the purest form.

Amla, reetha and shikakai suit all hair types and help prevent split ends, hair fall, dandruff, greying of hair and other hair related problems and further make your hair soft and silky.

How To Prepare

  • Soak 5-6 reetha pods, 6-7 pieces of shikakai, and a few amla pods in water overnight.
  • Heat the mixture in the morning and turn the heat off just when it begins to boil.
  • Allow the mixture to cool and blend it into the blender (check out for seeds and other hardy material and remove first).
  • Strain the mixture and discard the residue of the ingredients.
  • Now use the liquid concoction as a shampoo.

While washing your hair with amla, reetha, and shikakai shampoo, you will feel like the shampoo is tangling your hair, but once you wash it off your hair, your hair will be healthier and shinier than before.
